Description
1970’s DUBROVNIK CHESS SET WITH EXTRA QUEEN.
The Dubrovnik chess set is a timeless design classic that originated in 1950 for the 9th Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The set’s design was commissioned to reflect the elegance and rich cultural heritage of Dubrovnik, known for its stunning medieval architecture and historical significance. Its distinctive features, such as the sleek knights and unique bishop design, set it apart from other chess sets available at the time. The bases of all the pieces have been made chunkier and fatter. In fact this set is the heaviest in its class.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Dubrovnik chess set is its connection to Bobby Fischer master once quoted – “This is the best set I have ever played on. It is marvelous.” He expressed his admiration for the set’s minimalist design and superior functionality, and he even used it in critical matches, including the 1972 World Chess Championship.
